Government Lawngtlai College had been established by the people of Lai Autonomous District Council in the year 1980. Presently, it continues to be one of the two colleges catering to the needs of the people within the entire district. Right from the beginning, the college has produced successful under – graduate students, and has continued to maintain an impressive academic record especially in view of being located at such a remote and backward region of the state of Mizoram.
The college is ideally situated on a hillock within Lawngtlai town, but away from the noises and other distraction of town. It has an approach road of 700 mtrs (appox.) branching off the main (National Highway No. 54). Lawngtlai is the headquarters of Lai Autonomous District Council as well as the Administrative headquarters of Lawngtlai District, one of the eleventh administrative districts in the state. Lawngtlai town caters to the needs of more than a hundred villages which fall under the administration of the Deputy Commissioner, Lawngtlai District. There are around twenty(20) high schools and four Higher Secondary Schools (both Govt. and private) within the district serve as the feeders of the college.
